How many Jazz bands are there at NWHS?

Northwest High School proudly offers a dynamic jazz program tailored to student interest and passion. Depending on the level of student interest, we have two to three exceptional jazz bands to meet their musical aspirations. The Northwest Jazz Orchestra, Northwest Big Band, and Northwest Jazz Lab are the vibrant ensembles that make up our renowned jazz program. Whether it's the bold sounds of the Jazz Orchestra, the swinging rhythms of the Big Band, or the exploratory nature of the Jazz Lab, our students have the opportunity to delve into the diverse and captivating world of jazz.

How do you take part in Jazz band?

Auditions take place the third week of May for placement in a band for the following school year. Audition materials are provided in Mid-April. Bands are announced before the school year ends as the Jazz Orchestra typically starts rehearsals over the summer.

Where do Jazz Bands perform?

All of the jazz bands perform at festivals and concerts around central Iowa. The Jazz Orchestra also performs at contests including regular performances at the Iowa Jazz Championships.

What should performers wear for concerts?

Performers should dress their best. Specific colors or styles are often decided by the individual band but typically suit and tie, dress, dress pants or skirt is appropriate.
